New licence conditions for the supply of electricity and gas will be introduced on April 6 this year. These new conditions are an essential building block in the Government’s carbon reduction programme for the UK. Under these changes, all Profile Class 5-8 electricity meters, and all metered gas consuming over 732,000 kWh a year, must be replaced by smart meters.

The new metering standards for all Profile Class 5-8 meters will be CoP10 for whole current and CoP5 for CT meters. Customers have until 2014 to change their meters, but any smart meter installed as from the New Year must comply with this new metering code of practice. Read More→

According to new reference in the Wikipedia article on Demand Response “ study carried out in 2007 by The Brattle Group  for the United States showed that even a 5 percent drop in peak demand would yield substantial savings in generation, transmission, and distribution costs – enough to eliminate the need for installing and running some 625 infrequently used peaking power plants and associated power delivery infrastructure. This would yield an annual savings of $3 billion which translates into a present value of $35 billion over the next two decades.” No doubt similar savings are achievable by interlinking and strengthening the US grid interconnections as happened in the UK when its National Grid was constructed, and as would happen if European grids were interlinked, due to the retirement of duplicated and inneficient peaking and back up plant.
