International Shipping seems to be exempt from any form of regulation and legislation. Shipping uses the worst form of Bunker fuel Oil producing the most CO2 and the most other pollutants. So Should we be using any of the following instead ? Back to Sailing Ships. Sails or Kites can provide at least a proportion of the motive power required and reduce the power required from polluting Oil Engines. Nuclear Powered Ships; like the US Navy Aircraft Carriers, and submarines. Liquefied Natural Gas is transported by Tankers, but do the tankers themselves run on LNG ? This would be less polluting than horrible bunker oil. Could Solar power also make even a small contribution. Cover the ship from Stem to Stern with PV panels. For short sea crossings Battery Electric could be used, recharging at each end. An increasing number of inland pleasure cruisers are Battery Electric. Solar Powered Airships ? A very large surface area of balloon to capture solar energy The Zephyr remote control Spy plane can already run continuously on solar energy captured during the day. Funny thing When sending goods across the Oceans by ship - it is called a Cargo. When sending goods by road where the cars go – it is called a shipment. I know - Wave power ![]() Thanks Chris. |

However I see a number of issues.
Do not knock ships, when compared with any other from of transport they win hands down for energy per passenger Km or Cargo Km operated. It might be possible to get agreement for internal shipping within the EU but what happens when you look internationally. To get an international agreement on emissions from shipping there would be lots of areas of conflict. Would the ship have to meet the regulations of the country of registration or the HO of the company who owns the ship? We all know about flags of convenience. |
