CHP

[edit] Converting existing Power plant to Combined Heat & Power
Issues to be considered are:
a) Existing plant are largely distant from heavily built up areas. So CHP would require long pipelines to reach a good heat sink.
b) Existing turbines have low pressure turbines with near 0 BarA condensate extraction pressure. At this pressure the quality of heat is far too low to use for CHP.
c) To enable CHP, large amounts of the low pressure turbine blading would need to be removed and the turbine shaft be rebalanced. The end result would be at a guess 10% less power for the alternator. Although conversion to CHP is still worthwhile, the above are significant when considering the cost benefit.
Do we need a study for the 'CHP from existing Non-CHP Generating plant' model ?
Dave.
